Since 2007, Ali has been working in Singapore as a general construction worker. He earns about $1,100 per month to support his family on six back in Bangladesh. Ali’s family consists of his mother, older sister, his wife and three children. He is the sole breadwinner of his family.

In 2009, Ali suffered from gastric medical issues called ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis is a long-term condition that results in inflammation and ulcers of the colon and rectum. Prior to the Circuit Breaker period, Ali has been returning to Bangladesh for short periods to have access to healthcare as he could not afford treatment in Singapore. However, due to Covid-19, it is not viable for him to take leave and return to Bangladesh for treatment. Hence, he has to receive treatment in Singapore. Every two to four months, Ali has to go for his regular medical consultation. Ali shared with our caseworkers that he is taking his medication at a slower rate than advised from the doctor so that his medication could last longer. The consultation and the medications would cost him about $405 per visit.

In addition to his own health issues, Ali’s wife suffers from stomach ulcer and is in need of treatment as well. His wife’s treatment would cost him $2,300 per year and the family is unable to afford the treatment.

Ali is now in a dilemma whether to use his remaining savings to continue receiving treatment or to remit the money back home to care for his family. Hence, Ray of Hope would like to raise $4,020 to help Ali with his medical expenses ($405 x 4 consultations) and to help his family with their living expenses ($600 x 4 months).
