Mr. Meiyappan made a wrong decision and is now paying the price of it.  The 67-year-old turned to drugs after a long six-year break since he was diagnosed with various medical conditions from 2010 onwards. Mr. Meiyappan suffers from heart issues, chronic spinal injury, liver and respiratory issues, and high blood pressure.

Prior to his incarceration, Mr. Meiyappan was supporting himself with an income of $1,800, with him doing painting and sand plastering. Mr. Meiyappan shared with the caseworkers that at the lowest point of his life, he had given up hope and even wanted to end his life. Now that he is serving his time at the halfway house, he is thankful that he had not made another wrong decision. Currently, Mr. Meiyappan is receiving emotional support from his caseworkers as he awaits to be enrolled in courses to upgrade himself in order to prepare for his future employment. Moving forward, Mr. Meiyappan hopes to nurse his health back so that he can continue working to support himself financially.
