‘Tis the season for bakes and bubbly…but at Soap Cycling Singapore, we’re helping to create a different kind of bubbly – with soap. 

2020 has been a challenging year for many. The pandemic caught us all by surprise, disrupting lives and throwing many plans into disarray as we went into lockdown earlier this year. But the year is not over!

There’s still time for us to press ahead for a clean end to 2020, and a sparkling start to 2021. In this season of thanksgiving and gifting, consider supporting us in our mission to continue getting soap out to the people who need it most. No amount is too small to make a difference.

There can never be enough soap

Soap is undoubtedly a pivotal resource in our community’s fight against COVID-19. Yet, there are communities amongst us that still lack access to this humble everyday item. A study commissioned by the Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics (HOME) in April 2020 revealed that 41 per cent of migrant workers staying at the dormitories did not have adequate access to soap or hand sanitisers. 

These results were corroborated by a study Soap Cycling Singapore (SCSG) conducted where 75 per cent of migrant workers surveyed believed they needed more soap. Dormitory toilets were small and haphazardly cleaned. This situation prompted a need for SCSG to step up to ensure vulnerable communities have access to soap.

Since the start of 2020, we have distributed 1,700kg (that’s about 42,500 bars!) of soap to over 12,000 migrant workers, vulnerable individuals and children. We seek to engage the communities by highlighting the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective way of combating the virus. 

SCSG partnered with our community partners to distribute essential items to the migrant workers, especially those staying at far-flung dormitories located in Sungei Tengah, Tuas, Westlite and factory-converted housing in estates like Tai Seng.  

How Will The Funds Be Used 

1. Funds raised will go towards supporting our work to distribute soap (an essential resource in fighting COVID-19) and care packs to communities in need. They will also go towards developing progammes to highlight the importance of handwashing with soap;
2.  Help with the distribution of another 2,000kg of soap reaching 15,000 people for the rest of the year, and in 2021. We will focus our distributions to migrant workers staying at the factory-converted and purpose-built dormitories, many of which fall out of the radar due to their locations. We will also channel soap to the lower-income families.

ABOUT SOAP CYCLING SINGAPORE 

Soap Cycling Singapore started three years ago as a youth-centric organisation that strives to reduce wastage, improve sanitation and hygiene and provide a platform for education and empowerment through soap recycling. We are now a non-profit organisation recognised by the Singapore Centre for Social Enterprise (raISE). Recently, we also emerged as one of the Top 5 Social Enterprise winners of the People’s Choice Award at the finale of raiSE’s FestivalForGood.

Students are encouraged and empowered to join our movement to collect lightly used and unused bar soap collected from the hospitality industry, reprocess them and partner with charities here and in the region to distribute soap to communities in need. 

Through this soap recycling movement, we aim to improve the sanitation and hygiene situation in Singapore and in Southeast Asia, especially among communities where access to soap and sanitation items can prove challenging. Not only does this help to reduce the spread of viruses and diseases, but also contribute to a greener community.
