Mdm Erra never imagined that protecting her children would mean rebuilding her life from the ground up. A devoted single mother of seven school-going children, she recently made the difficult but necessary decision to file for divorce from her abusive husband. It was not a choice made lightly. For years, she and her two eldest children endured harm that no family should face. Today, her husband remains in remand, and while a Personal Protection Order offers some legal safeguard, fear still lingers in their small 2-room rental flat. The uncertainty of his possible return weighs heavily on them. In such a confined space, safety is not guaranteed, and peace feels fragile. Yet, even in this uncertainty, Mdm Erra holds firmly to her decision. “My kids are my priority,” she says, her voice steady with resolve.

Holding On Through Hardship

Life has become a delicate balancing act. Once a full-time housewife, Mdm Erra now faces the daunting task of becoming the sole provider for her family. With no prior work experience, she is actively searching for employment that allows her to care for her children while keeping food on the table. Every day is a lesson in stretching what little she has. She walks her children to school to save on transport, prepares every meal at home, and avoids any expense that is not absolutely necessary. Still, the challenges are relentless. Three of her youngest children require diapers and milk, and daily costs continue to rise. She has turned to family and friends for loans, but even their support can only go so far. Meanwhile, her eldest son, preparing for his PSLE, struggles under the emotional strain of an unstable home. “I try my best even with this situation,” Mdm Erra shares, a quiet testament to her strength.

Despite everything, Mdm Erra has not lost sight of what matters most: giving her children a future filled with safety, education, and opportunity.
