Help Hassan Rebuild His Life for His Newborn Daughter
After a workplace injury challenges his ability to work, Hassan is fighting for fair compensation to support his newborn daughter. Help him hold on and rebuild a future for his family.
When Hassan came to Singapore in March 2024, he carried hope in his heart. After 11 years of marriage, he and his wife were finally expecting their first child. Determined to build a better future for his daughter, Hassan found a job in Singapore as a forklift operator in the construction sector.
But just months later, a workplace accident changed everything.
Hassan lost the ability to flex his right thumb, making even basic tasks like eating with his hand, a daily practice he grew up with as a person practicing the Muslim faith, painfully difficult.
Wounded at Work, Alone After
While operating a drilling machine during renovation works at a condominium swimming pool along Orchard Road, Hassan and his team were under pressure to complete the job by 5pm. Around 3pm, the employer altered the work method. He instructed Hassan to hold the drill handle while another worker pushed from behind. When the drill struck a rebar, it rotated forcefully, pulling Hassan’s right thumb into the crevice and causing a deep laceration.Â
Instead of bringing him directly to the hospital, the employer dropped Hassan at Bangla Square (Desker Road) and told him to seek treatment on his own. Though the nearby clinic and Kallang Polyclinic both advised urgent hospital care, the employer delayed consent. Hassan eventually made his way alone, bleeding and in pain, across eight MRT stops to Sengkang Hospital.Â
Fighting Forward With Hope
With support from Here With You (HWY), Hassan fought to stay in Singapore for treatment, despite his employer’s initial resistance. Doctors later confirmed the severity of his injury and recommended surgery. Meanwhile, Hassan also fell victim to two scams that drained his savings just because he wanted to ensure his family back home had something to celebrate Eid with, deepening his struggles.
In February 2025, a compensation offer of $7,085.80,based on an underreported salary, was issued. This reduced the amount computed for his compensation, an injustice compounded by the fact that his ability to work has been permanently compromised. This compelled Hassan to file for a Medical Board Review to fight for a fair outcome for his family’s future. It is now pending review, estimated at a further two months.
Hassan’s days of working in construction are unfortunately over, but he hopes to start a small business to provide for his daughter, the child he and his wife waited over a decade for.
How You Can Help
We are raising $2,170 to support Hassan’s living expenses ($300/month for six months) and pay for his Medical Board Review fee ($370).
