For over a decade, Mary and her five children have called their small rental unit home. Life has not been easy for this single mother, who has battled Major Depressive Disorder since the birth of her youngest child. Despite facing countless struggles—including financial instability, cramped living conditions, and deteriorating home furnishings—Mary has remained steadfast in her dedication to her children.
The Challenges They Face
Mary and her children live in a tight space with no room to gather, talk, or even eat at a proper dining table. They currently eat their meals on the floor or on the bed, making family bonding difficult. Their sleeping arrangements are equally challenging—three boys share a single mattress, one girl sleeps on a thin mattress topper, and another girl sleeps on the sofa. Due to the lack of space, stepping on each other is a nightly occurrence, often leading to fights. Their old mattresses are riddled with holes, stains, and even insects, causing frequent back pain and discomfort.
Storage is another major issue. Their decade-old wardrobe has broken doors and drawers, allowing their cats to sneak in and shed fur on their clothes, forcing them to spend extra time and money cleaning their outfits every morning. The kitchen is infested with cockroaches at night due to open food storage, but the family cannot afford built-in cabinets, which would help keep their food safe and clean. The ceiling fan is faulty, forcing them to use two standing fans that pose a safety risk to the children.
Why Mary Needs Your Help
Mary has done everything she can to make their home livable, even using DIY wallpaper to create a warmer environment. However, the reality is that the family lacks the financial means to afford essential home improvements. Mary is unfit for work and fully dependent on financial assistance to support her children, who are still in school.
Despite their hardships, Mary remains hopeful. She dreams of a home where her children can sleep comfortably, have their own spaces, and live in a cleaner, safer environment. A successful renovation would not only improve their daily living conditions but also foster a sense of stability and security for the entire family.
