Help Mdm Rani and her son rebuild a safe home, after years of pain, caregiving, and financial hardship.

“This is a House, Not a Home”

At 63, Mdm Rani has lived a life shaped by care, courage, and sacrifice. A cancer survivor and mother of two, she ran her own cake business in Malaysia for 17 years, raising her sons through sheer hard work. But after a fractured hip and growing health complications, she moved back to Singapore in 2023 to live with her younger son, Vinesh (33).

Today, their lives are held together by love, but fraying under the weight of daily hardship.

Sleep Deprived, Space Constrained

Since returning to Singapore, Mdm Rani and Vinesh have been sharing a cramped two-room rental flat and a single queen-sized bed. The lack of space has left them severely sleep-deprived. Mdm Rani, a light sleeper, is often disturbed by Vinesh’s sleep apnea and frequent unconscious movements, which have even caused her to fall off the bed. The cramped bed also worsens her shoulder pain, making it impossible to  turn without hurting. For the past two years, both mother and son have been getting just 2 to 3 hours of sleep each night.

“We haven’t had a good night’s sleep for a very long time,” says Vinesh.

“An Accident Waiting to Happen”

Mdm Rani’s mobility is limited. She is wheelchair-bound, able to stand but not walk. She also suffers from multiple health conditions, including asthma, osteoporosis and major depressive disorder.

Mdm Rani relies on home-cooked meals to meet her dietary needs and maintain her health. “If I don’t cook, I’ll go hungry,” she says. But her current kitchen setup is far from safe.

With nowhere else to put it, the gas canister sits exposed and dangerously close to the stove. The lack of counter space forces her to place ingredients and cooked food on the floor—or even on top of the gas canister. For Mdm Rani, the kitchen isn’t just inconvenient, it’s a daily hazard.

Now, she eats only one meal a day.. Cooking, once her joy, has become painful and demoralising,

“This is a house,” she says. “It is not a home. A home is a place where I feel loved, comfortable and secure.”

Trying to Get Back on Their Feet

Ray of Hope previously supported Mdm Rani’s home-based baking business in 2023. Since then, she and Vinesh have fulfilled over 100 orders. But by late 2024, worsening arthritis in her right hand made baking impossible. The pain was so severe, she began dropping and breaking plates and containers..

Determined to recover and resume her baking, Mdm Rani underwent hand surgery in May. Her recovery is ongoing and is expected to take several more months.

In October 2024, Vinesh secured a full-time job as a bakery counter staff, hoping to restore some financial stability. However, the family’s community financial assistance ended due to his new employment status

Vinesh now works long hours to make ends meet, baking only when he has time after work and managing just two orders a month. With the loss of aid and only one income, even essentials like a proper bed and safe kitchen remain out of reach.

What Your Support Will Cover

Ray of Hope is raising $8,159.80 to help this mother and son finally rest in safety, and live with the dignity they deserve:

1. Kitchen cabinet with drawers & quartz top – $6,800

2. Bedding essentials – $1,359.80

– 2 single bedframes: $742.80

– 2 mattresses: $459

– 2 pillows: $86

A Safe, Peaceful Home

This support does more than improve their living conditions. It lets Vinesh focus at work, knowing his mother is safe. It will let Mdm Rani recover without pain or danger. And it will give them both something they haven’t had in years—rest.

If you can, please give. Your gift will turn a struggling rental unit into a home where two people can finally heal, sleep, and breathe easy again.
