The Struggle

Mr Lim, 66, has been battling colorectal cancer and recovering from a stroke for more than a decade. Today, he is completely bedridden and is dependent on his wife for his day-to-day needs. While being the sole caregiver to her bed-bound husband is not easy, Mdm Goh has never complained about the physical exhaustion from caring for her husband despite having her own medical conditions. Mdm Goh suffers from a weak heart and severe breathlessness. Her polio condition also restricts her leg movements and she walks with a limp.

Mdm Goh told us that it is often tedious having to bring her husband to the hospital especially whenever she feels breathless. To her, nothing matters more than being there for her spouse who is bedridden. However, with the both of them medically unfit for work, Mr Lim and Mdm Goh are worried about their future, especially when they were only relying on their monthly public assistance of $590 that ended in December.

Help Needed – Give Hope

Although the elderly couple is currently staying with their daughter and son-in-law, they are not being supported financially by them due to their estranged relationship. Mr Lim confided in us that they no longer hope that their only daughter will support them. Despite owning the 3-room flat, Mr Lim and Mdm Goh often find themselves confined to the small bedroom with little or minimal interactions even with their two grandchildren. It also pains them deeply that they do not share a close relationship with their grandchildren when all they wish is to have family support.

Financial Breakdown

ROHI would like to raise $1,320 ($330 x 4 months) for Mr Lim’s medical consumables (catheter and milk supply $130) which are not covered under Medifund, as well as the family’s groceries expenses ($200).

*Mdm Goh is currently receiving public assistance from the Social Service Office (SSO).
