Mdm Latifah*, 51 years old, suffers from high blood pressure. Her husband, who is also 51 years old, is suffering from a brain tumour and is undergoing treatment. Mdm Latifah is currently caring for 7 of her grandchildren between the ages of 5 to 16 years old. Two of her children, parents to the 7 kids, are currently incarcerated and with no other family members to care for them, Mdm Latifah, as their grandmother, took them in. Mdm Latifah, her husband and 7 grandchildren are currently staying in a cramped and simply furnished 2 room rental flat.
Mdm Latifah is working part-time at an F&B outlet. Due to her husband’s illness and caregiving duties to her 7 grandchildren, it is difficult for her to work full time. Groceries are her biggest expenses as there are 9 people in the family and with 7 growing grandchildren, putting food on the table is a great source of worry for the caring and loving grandmother. Mdm Latifah has also amassed arrears with HDB and Singapore Power.
It has not been easy for Mdm Latifah. Caring for a husband who is battling a brain tumour and with 7 grandchildren to care for, Mdm Latifah greatly worries for the future.
