22 year-old Pei Ling is the older sibling. She will start her new job as a Personal Assistant this week, with a salary of $1,200 a month. Her younger sister, Pei Sin, 20, is currently in Year 1 at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and works part-time as a warehouse packer, earning a nett income of $500 each month. Their mother, 57, is a part-time office cleaner who earns around $430 a month.

Pei Ling’s father, 69, was once the family’s sole breadwinner. He was a driver, but has been unable to to work since suffering a stroke in November 2021. Since then, he has been in an out of the hospital. After he was discharged in January 2022, the family has devoted nearly all of their time and resources to caring for him. The family hopes to enroll him at a daycare center, where he can be better supported by professional staff, while the rest of them work to bring in more income for the expenses.

When asked about their daily routine, Pei Ling shared that she works in the day and begins a second shift late into the night, caring for her father. Pei Sin described her day as, “rushing” — she rushes home right after school to be there for her father.
