Happy Grandparent’s Day!

A big Thank You to everyone for supporting the Alzheimer’s Disease Association (ADA). 

In Singapore, around one in 10 seniors aged 60 and above – or around 86,000 people – may have dementia, with numbers expected to soar to 130,000 or more by 2030. For a person living with dementia, they may struggle financially.  

If your grandparents or parents have been diagnosed with dementia, please consider honouring them by donating in their name. 

Your donation will help greatly in ADA’s continued provision and improvement of various programmes, services and operations.

Celebrating Grandparents Day when your loved ones have dementia

Officially established in 1999, Grandparents Day is a day for us to remember the selfless love and achievements of our grandparents. It is a time of celebration and appreciation, and there’s no better time to focus on the special bond between grandchildren and grandparents and how we can continue to nurture relationships.

1. Go through old photos, keepsakes, or magazines that remind the person with dementia of their hobbies. Engaging the sense of smell through familiar scents, tasting favourite dishes, or enjoying tactile activities like painting or crafts are also suitable activities.
2. Listening to Music is a wonderful medium that elderly persons with dementia can reminisce with and react positively to. Check out VintageRadio.SG, a new streamed radio station that plays vintage songs and oldies from the 50’s to 70’s. Tune in and enjoy the line-up of both English and Mandarin content like vintage songs, wellness talks, story-telling sessions by seniors, reminiscence of life in the good old days, and letter reading.
3. Visit our gift ideas that are meaningful or useful for people living with dementia. There are different gifts available depending on the stage of dementia your loved one is.

Life is uncertain and that we should cherish the time we spend with our loved ones and to create happy memories and good times together.
