What happened to Sajib?

On 12 July 2022, Sajib was dismantling scaffolding about 3 floors up when he fell from a height of 9 meters. He landed on his right side, with his face hitting the ground so hard that he lost consciousness. The accident resulted in a significant injury impacting multiple discs in his spine and impinging of nerve roots. This continues to cause Sajib severe pain and doctors have advised that he  would not be able to do heavy lifting jobs for life. 

Sajib needed metal implants in his backbone. Post recovery, the prescribed painkillers did not alleviate his persistent pain even after his medical leave ended. Sajib seeks treatment by attending weekly physiotherapy offered by an NGO, traveling for 1.5 hours each time in hopes of recovery.

32-year-old Sajib is from Bangladesh. He found work here in Singapore as a General Worker in Construction after paying hefty agent fees. Sajib was earning approximately $900 a month and as the main breadwinner, he would remit the bulk of his salary to his family for their living and medical expenses, keeping around $300 for himself. 

It has been a year since his accident which resulted in a lumbar spondylosis with degenerative disk disease (L2 to L5) crowding the cauda and potentially impinging the nerve roots. Sajib continues to struggle with severe pain and mounting pressure to send remittances home to his parents who need medication for their health conditions. Sajib’s father suffers from a neck condition requiring monthly injection and calcium pills, while his mother requires pain management medication for severe nerve pain.

Sajib’s younger brother, married with a school-going child, works in a metal workshop to support the family. However, his income of approximately S$170 a month is insufficient to cover the family’s expenses. The chronic pain on his lower back from lifting heavy items in the metal workshop also limits the number of hours he is able to work, leaving the family in greater distress.
