Azhar, 22, is the sole breadwinner supporting his family of four, which includes his ailing mother, elderly father, and school-going younger brother. 

Initially employed as a logistic worker, Azhar faced an unexpected setback when his company underwent significant workforce reductions earlier this year. Consequently, he had to pivot to work as an ad-hoc mover. Azhar’s ad-hoc employment has been unstable, as job opportunities in his field are currently limited. This sudden transition led to a significant reduction in his income, presenting a daunting financial hurdle for him and his family.

At the age of 22, Azhar carries the weight of his family’s financial well-being on his shoulders, providing for his elderly parents and younger brother. While his previous job as a logistic worker served them well, the company’s workforce reductions forced Azhar into the role of an ad-hoc mover.

Azhar’s mother’s health has been deteriorating, leading her to need dialysis treatment when she was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease in December 2022. His father has taken on the role of her primary caregiver as she requires assistance in her daily activities. This meant that the elderly couple, who were both previously employed, could no longer bring in an income to help with household expenses. In addition to his new role as the sole income earner, Azhar has to step into the role of caretaker and accompany his mother to numerous hospital visits as his parents are unable to navigate the complexities of the health care system, nor understand what is communicated to them at the medical appointments. 

Despite the immense challenges Azhar faces, his determination to support his family is unwavering. He doesn’t view it as a burden, but rather as a responsibility as a son and an older brother. Azhar hopes to secure a more stable and better paying employment during this period to alleviate the financial strain on the family.
