For years, Mdm Yuni has been the anchor of her family. As the sole breadwinner supporting four school-going children, she works part-time at a fast-food chain.

The flexible hours allow her to juggle caregiving, school needs, and the daily responsibilities of running a household largely on her own. Her older children step up where they can, but the weight of the family’s stability still rests on her shoulders.

Life took a sudden turn earlier this year when her husband, Mr Kasrin, unexpectedly fell ill while driving for his job as a private hire driver — the income the family depended on.

When One Health Crisis Became Many

🔸April: Mr Kasrin experienced sudden double vision while driving. The symptoms persisted the next day, prompting him to seek medical attention. Following a series of examinations, doctors informed him that he had likely experienced a mild stroke.

Just as he was preparing for discharge, he developed severe abdominal pain, leading doctors to suspect another medical issue. He was sent home with medication and placed on medical leave while awaiting further follow-ups. As he was certified unfit to drive, he had to end his rental contract early and pay a penalty — an unexpected burden at a time when medical uncertainty was already weighing on the family.

🔸June: Mr Kasrin underwent surgery to address the abdominal condition. The family hoped life would finally settle.

🔸Late November: He again experienced worrying symptoms — chest pain and breathlessness. This episode led to an emergency ballooning procedure to open his blocked artery and stabilise him in the immediate term. Soon after, he was scheduled for a bypass surgery on 8 December to further support his long-term recovery.

Through every setback, the family held tightly to what mattered most — their children.

As Mr Kasrin shared, “To me and my wife, we want our children to be taken care of. This matters most to us.” Yet each crisis brought mounting financial stress.

Trying to Stay Independent While Their Stability Crumbles

Before these health complications, the family’s SSO applications had been rejected because both parents were expected to work full-time.

Once caregiving, medical appointments, and recovery became a constant part of their lives, that expectation became impossible.

They are now working closely with a Family Service Centre social worker to reapply for support. Despite everything, the family has always demonstrated a strong desire for independence.

They remain active in the Ray of Hope community, attending events when they can and staying connected to the support around them.

In their own words: “The community has helped us, and we believe once we get better, we can give back.” Their gratitude remains simple and sincere: “Thankful for the Ray of Hope community.”

How Your Help Can Carry Them Through the Next Six Months

With no income from Mr Kasrin during his recovery and Mdm Yuni working part-time, the family is struggling to keep food on the table. Groceries — the most basic daily need — have become a source of worry.

Ray of Hope is raising $3,000 (six months of grocery support via NTUC vouchers) to help the family stay afloat during this challenging period. Your contribution ensures that the children can eat well and that Mdm Yuni has one less fear weighing on her as she continues caring for her family.

Your kindness provides more than food — it gives this family stability and hope, and reassures them that their community is walking with them until they regain their footing.
