When a Sudden Collapse Changed Everything

When 56-year-old Mdm Eva collapsed in the middle of a Pop-Up event she was running, her friend rushed over, assuming it was just fatigue. Eva had been pushing herself for weeks, often staying up late to finish her handmade crochet pieces while juggling ad hoc jobs and her small home-based business. She was used to powering through exhaustion, but this time, her body could not keep up.

Doctors later informed the family that Eva had suffered a mild hemorrhagic stroke due to unmanaged high blood pressure. She was admitted for close monitoring and now requires hourly medication. Her medical bill has already reached $15,502.03 and continues to rise daily.

As she is not a Singapore citizen, she does not receive medical subsidies. There is currently no confirmed discharge plan, and Eva is in the rehabilitation ward, where she will be staying for another 2-3 weeks depending on her progress. Speech therapy and physiotherapy are ongoing to support her recovery. Her daughter, Hazel remains in regular communication with the medical social worker and continues to update loved ones on her mother’s condition.

A Family With Little to Lean On

Before she fell ill, Eva carried the family’s financial load on her own. Her husband, who is here on a tourist visa, cannot work and must leave the country every so often to renew his entry stamp. He does what he can at home, helping Eva with her home-based business and day-to-day chores, but he is unable to contribute an income.

Hazel, 23, is the youngest of three children from Eva’s first marriage. Her brothers are not involved in supporting the family, leaving her to shoulder everything on her own. She pays for the rental flat, utilities and daily expenses while caring for both parents.

She began working full time in early 2025 as a software tester. Her income was just enough to keep the family stable, especially since Eva continued contributing through ad hoc work and her craft business. But with her mother suddenly unable to work, the family’s financial balance has been disrupted overnight.

To stretch their limited budget, they rely on simple home-cooked meals and weekly groceries distributed by a nearby community group. Even with these efforts, Hazel’s single income cannot keep up with a rapidly growing medical bill.

Why Your Support Matters Now

Ray of Hope is raising $15,502.03 for Eva’s hospital bills.

Each day of hospitalisation adds to a bill the family cannot bear. Without help, they are at real risk of falling into arrears, which would worsen the emotional pressure Hazel already feels. She has been doing everything possible to hold the household together, but the load has become too heavy for one person to manage.

Your support will allow Eva to focus on healing without the fear of mounting debt. When she regains strength, Eva hopes to return to her craft work, which has always given her purpose, routine and a sense of dignity. Her ability to earn again will also restore some stability to the household.
