Supporting Shamirah and Son During Her Job Search
A Childhood Marked by Instability
At just 25 years old, Shamirah is raising her three-year-old son largely on her own in a small two-room rental flat with her father. Each day is a careful balance between caring for her young child and searching for work that can support them.
Her journey to this point has not been easy.
As a child, Shamirah faced significant instability and often had to move between households due to difficult family circumstances. Eventually, she spent two years in a residential home — one of the first places where she experienced some stability in her life.
During that time, she focused on rebuilding her future. Shamirah completed a private nursing course and later worked at a nursing home, gaining valuable skills and a sense of purpose. For the first time, she began to see a path toward standing on her own feet.
Becoming a Mother and Starting Again
She later moved in with her father and married shortly after. However, the marriage soon became increasingly strained and emotionally difficult, leaving Shamirah feeling unsafe and unsupported.
In 2023, shortly after their son was born, her husband left the family. More recently, she learned that he has since been incarcerated and will remain in prison for a year.
With no contact between them, Shamirah now shoulders the responsibility of raising her young son largely on her own.
Despite the difficult circumstances, she remains focused on doing her best to provide a stable and caring environment for her child.
Working Hard to Give Her Son a Future
Before her son was born, Shamirah worked full-time. But as a single mother, finding stable work has become challenging. Many jobs she previously held in cleaning and food service require long hours and strict schedules, which are difficult to manage when caring for a young child who may fall ill or need to be picked up from childcare.
Despite these obstacles, Shamirah continues searching for opportunities. She takes on hourly work when she can and regularly applies for jobs that may offer the flexibility she needs as a single parent. She is currently waiting to hear back from several applications.
In the meantime, she relies on small acts of support. She occasionally receives diaper assistance from a social service agency, and friends step in to help when they can. A social worker is also supporting her in applying for childcare subsidies and other available assistance.
Still, the months ahead remain uncertain.
“I just want a simple and stable life for my son,” Shamirah says quietly.
With temporary support for basic living expenses, Shamirah will have the breathing room to continue her job search and work toward building a more stable future for her child.
How can you help?
Ray of Hope is raising $2,781.60 to help Shamirah cover essential living expenses over the next four months while she continues searching for stable employment.
Your support will go toward the following basic needs for her and her young son:
- Milk & Diapers — $781.60 (About $195.40 per month)
Ensuring her young son has the daily essentials he needs to stay healthy and cared for.
- Groceries — $2,000 (About $500 per month)
Helping Shamirah put regular meals on the table while she works toward securing stable income.
Every contribution, big or small, will help provide stability during this challenging period and give this determined young mother the time she needs to rebuild a secure future for her family.
