Mr Ong Lai Wee is 64 this year. Most of his days were structured around caring for his 91-year-old mother at home.

“As long as my mother was comfortable, I didn’t mind,” he shared.

Three months ago, his 91-year-old mother suffered a stroke and was admitted to a nursing home. She now stays there alongside Mr Ong’s younger sister, who is 62. For the first time in many years, Mr Ong returned to a flat that felt noticeably quieter.

At home, the silence has been an adjustment. “I’m not used to it,” he shared softly.

He had been visiting them regularly, making the trip whenever he could. Recently, visits were paused due to the rise in COVID cases. “I just hope they are doing alright inside,” he said. Not being able to see them has been difficult.

To keep himself active, Mr Ong tries to join activities at the nearby Active Ageing Centre whenever he can. He attends simple programmes and spends time with other seniors in the neighbourhood. It helps pass the time, though he still thinks often about his mother and sister.

Living With His Own Health Conditions

Mr Ong has his own medical history to manage. He suffered a stroke in 2006, developed heart-related issues in 2008, and earlier this year in 2025, doctors discovered a brain tumour. He remains under specialist follow-up.

He also receives treatment for a mood disorder and takes medication regularly to keep his condition stable.

His last formal job was as a cleaner. As his health became more complicated, continuing physical work was no longer possible. Since then, he has relied entirely on social assistance.

Each month, he receives:

  1. $560 in cash assistance
  2. $26 for rent
  3. $22.50 for Town Council fees

After settling utilities, transport to medical appointments, and basic necessities, there is very little left. “I don’t spend much,” he said. “Just what I need.”

Groceries and Daily Necessities

We are hoping to raise $794.04* to provide six months of grocery support for Mr Ong through NTUC vouchers — about $130 each month.

With his limited income, even basic groceries can become a strain. These vouchers will give him some breathing room and allow him to buy what he needs without worrying about whether there will be enough at the end of the month.

Your support will help Mr Ong continue living independently and with dignity. More importantly, it will provide peace of mind, allowing him to focus on managing his health and maintaining his quality of life without the constant worry of whether he can afford the essentials from month to month.

*The campaign goal includes a 1.8% payment processing fee.
