Mr Khoo: “As long as I have my meals and can pay my bills, I’m thankful.”
Mr Khoo is 71 and lives alone in a one-room rental flat.
For much of his life, he worked in a factory. It was steady employment, and he supported himself without needing help. “If can work, then work,” he says plainly. That routine continued until 2015, when chronic health conditions made it impossible for him to continue.
Stopping work was not something he planned for. It also meant losing the income he had relied on for decades.
To manage his expenses, he shops carefully, comparing prices and choosing only what he needs. If something costs more than expected, he leaves it behind. “Must calculate,” he says. “If not, won’t be enough.”
Mr Khoo has been estranged from his siblings for decades. There is no family support to fall back on. He manages his daily needs, medical visits, and paperwork on his own. At 71, and with ongoing health concerns, returning to work is not realistic. His income does not change, even when prices do.
The Company He Keeps
Still, he makes an effort to go downstairs when he can.
When he feels well enough, he visits the Active Ageing Centre to join light activities and chat with other seniors in the neighbourhood.
Over time, these neighbours have become his circle. They check in on one another. If someone does not show up for a few days, someone will notice. These small gestures help him feel connected and less alone.
What We’re Raising Funds For
Ray of Hope is raising $1,221.60* ($200/month) to cover six months of groceries and daily necessities for Mr Khoo. With these costs covered, Mr Khoo will not have to constantly calculate whether his money will stretch to the end of each month.
What This Support Will Mean
With his food expenses taken care of for six months, Mr Khoo can use his monthly government support for utilities and medical transport without cutting back further on meals.
“I’m used to simple living,” he says. “As long as I have my meals and can pay my bills, I’m thankful.”
It means not having to put groceries back on the shelf because the total is too high.
It means opening his cupboard and knowing there is enough for the week ahead.
Your support will enable Mr Khoo to continue living independently in the community he knows.
