Phaw Mi Laa is an orphan under the care of her adoptive mother. Her biological parents died 5 years ago.

Phaw Mi Laa has been diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia in a hospital in Myanmar. She has been bleeding persistently from her nose from 24 May and has extremely low platelet count.

Her adoptive mother is a betel nut farmer and does not have the means to provide financial support for Phaw Mi Laa’s medical treatments and has relinquished her authority to the team managing the school. She has been studying in the School of Mercy under the OM Mercy Teams International (OM MTI) at the Thailand-Myanmar Border.

Since then, funds have been raised to enable her to be treated in Yangon. Although she is under a 6-month oral medication treatment programme, her condition has not improved. With an extremely low platelet count, she needs blood transfusion every 3 days or so. Her current treatment ends in January 2020, but if she does not show any improvements by then, her treatment needs to be continued while the team seeks an alternative treatment for her, which will most likely entail a bone marrow transplant. As there are no facilities for the transplant in Myanmar, she may have to be transferred to another country for the transplant.
