The Struggle

Earlier back, ROHI helped fundraise $630 (https://rohi.sg/case/details/83-year-old-grandmother%27s-love-for-her-family) and $960 (https://rohi.sg/case/details/Bring-light-to-the-lives-of-a-84-year-old-grandmother-and-her-autistic-grandson) for Mdm Wong and her family. 85 year old Mdm Wong currently lives with 55-year-old her daughter, Mdm Chua and 22-year-old grandson, Ivan. Mdm Chua, who has been the sole breadwinner of the family since her divorce, works as a cleaner in a school. Her nett salary of S$1,200 per month is barely sufficient for the household expenses.

Give Hope to an elderly grandmother

In addition to ensuring that there is food on the table for her family, Mdm Chua is worried about her elderly mum’s health as the condition of her weak legs seem to be getting worse and there is nothing much that she could do for her. Mdm Wong also suffers from hypertension and persistent back pain in addition to her weak legs, while Mdm Chua has diabetes. Ivan was diagnosed with severe autism and Obsessive-Compulsive disorder (OCD) in addition to displaying violence and aggressive behaviour towards his family members.

Although both Mdm Wong and Mdm Chua have filed a Personal Protection Order (PPO) against Ivan, the tense relationship that they share with Ivan has also resulted in Mdm Wong being constantly at risk everyday when Mdm Chua is at work. When she related the last incident that triggered her grandson’s aggressive behavior that led to the filing of the PPO, Mdm Wong lamented that there is only so much that an elderly like her can do when he does get aggressive.

When the case workers visited Mdm Wong, she told us that there were many occasions when she would just bear with the pain on her legs to save money on the TCM treatments that would help to ease the pain.

Financial Breakdown

ROHI would like to raise $1,740 ($440 x 4 months) for Mdm Wong’s TCM treatments ($240 per month) and their groceries expenses partially ($200 per month).

*Mdm Wong is currently receiving $600 quarterly from the Silver Support scheme. She is not receiving any assistance from SSO. Name has been changed to protect her identity.

Hong Bao for Hope 2020

Mdm Wong is one of the identified recipients of the Hong Bao for Hope 2020 campaign. When the case workers visited Mdm Wong, the elderly was happy to receive the additional funds for her family and wishes the donors a happy new year!
