What happened to Amzad?

On 9 December 2021, Amzad fell from a height of almost 2 meters due to a misstep as he was getting down from an excavator.He landed on his left side, directly impacting his elbow and the side of his spine.

Amzad was brought to a hospital and was prescribed painkillers. These did not alleviate his pain and he eventually attended multiple physiotherapy sessions. Amzad is deeply worried as he still experiences persistent pain in his lower back and left knee, affecting his mobility and hence, his ability to resume work even though his MC has ended. He is also unable to resume employment as he is on Special Pass and is currently awaiting the results of his injury assessment and work injury compensation claim.

The campaign aims to raise a monthly target of $640 for five months while he focuses on recuperating and for MOM assessment of his injuries to conclude so that he can receive his compensation. 49 year-old Amzad is from Bangladesh and is married with three children, aged 3, 6 and 10. He was employed to work in Singapore as a General Worker in the construction industry. Amzad managed to take home approximately $2,000 a month by taking on multiple shifts, and would remit the bulk of his salary to his family for their living expenses. 

Back home, Amzad was supporting his elderly parents, wife and their three children. In addition, he also provided for his sister and her two children after the passing of her husband recently. As the eldest son, the financial burden of the family sat squarely on his shoulders.

Since the accident, Amzad has lost the means to provide for his family. He is under immense pressure to get himself treated and impatiently awaits the WICA results.. This is compounded with worry over the possibility of not regaining his prior strength as this would have a direct impact on the possibility of future employment.

“It has been more than a year since the accident but my condition hasn’t been improving much. How can I support my family like this?”, Amzad told the caseworkers.
