Life, as we know, is full of unexpected twists and turns. Cancer, no matter who you are, is one of those twists that can catch anyone off guard. In October 2023, Belinda found herself facing this unexpected challenge.
Belinda Sunshine, a vibrant force of nature, has spent over decades captivating audiences in the radio, television and media industry. Her infectious spirit has touched countless lives, making her a cherished figure in her community and among fans.
Belinda has been involved in YouTube Channel Singapore One, hosting shows such as Woking with Sunshine and When We Were Young, providing a platform for people from all walks of life to connect with one another.
A Battle She Never Expected
Last October, life threw an unexpected challenge at Belinda when she discovered a lump in her breast. After numerous medical visits, she received the difficult news: HER-2 Breast Cancer. Yet, Belinda faced it head-on, bravely undergoing chemotherapy for six months. On June 21, 2024, she took the next big step, having a mastectomy to remove the lump. Thankfully, her doctors confirmed the cancer had not spread, and Belinda is now in remission. She remains under treatment, receiving regular sessions every three weeks until January 2025.
A Road to Recovery Filled with Hope
Since her surgery, Belinda has approached her recovery the only way she knows how—with everything she’s got. Day after day, she shows up to her physiotherapy sessions, pushing through the discomfort, determined to regain her strength.
Part of her recovery involves drinking only distilled water, something she never imagined would be a necessity. But the costs—over $100 a month—have become yet another hurdle. It’s a small but constant reminder of the toll this journey has taken on her, both physically and financially.
Before cancer came into her life, Belinda was in her element, sharing her love for Mass Communications, public speaking, and creative writing as an adjunct lecturer at the National University of Singapore and in schools. She loved inspiring her students, watching their confidence grow. But when she received the diagnosis, her world shifted, and she had to put her passion for teaching on hold. Now, with her savings depleted, the financial stress of her treatment and everyday expenses weighs heavily on her, making her recovery that much more challenging.
Belinda’s Message of Hope
“Cancer humbles you,” Belinda reflects, “no matter who you are.” Despite the struggles, her spirit remains unbroken. She’s still the vibrant Belinda we know, firmly believing that “age is just a number.” Now in remission, she’s filled with hope and eager for the future.
Belinda dreams of returning to teaching, and once she’s recovered, she wants to give back by mentoring marginalised children in underprivileged communities. She also envisions starting a modelling academy for seniors, helping others find joy and purpose later in life.
A Community Coming Together
Ray of Hope is committed to supporting Belinda on her journey. We’re raising $5,387.88 to provide her with six months of living expenses ($529.78/month) and household bills ($368.20/month).
With your support, Belinda hopes to return to teaching and lecturing after her treatment concludes in January next year. She aspires to continue contributing to society by teaching marginalised children in underprivileged communities to sing, act, dance and communicate in English. She also dreams of starting a modelling academy for fellow seniors who want to pursue a career in modelling.
Every act of kindness, no matter how small, is a step toward helping Belinda heal. Despite it all, Belinda’s spirit remains unbroken. She is still the vibrant woman who has inspired so many. And with a little support, she can continue to take each step toward recovery with hope.
