WeGardens aim to establish community gardens in worker dormitories to address both the lack of greenery in dormitories as well as lack of vegetables and fruits in worker diets. WeGardens aim to establish community gardens in worker dormitories to address both the lack of greenery in dormitories as well as lack of vegetables and fruits in worker diets. The lack of green spaces in dormitories creates urban heat islands which are not ideal for both worker health and environmental health of Singapore’s urban landscape. By creating community gardens for edibles, we seek to establish green spaces in dormitories and promote biodiversity in urban landscapes, improve worker mental well-being and supplement worker diets. Furthermore, by connecting with other community gardens, workers will be given a chance to interact with the general public in a vastly different setting.Â
The use of innovative drip irrigation reduces water use by at least 10-20% as well as reduces the maintenance needed. Workshops provided also allow for workers upskilling and development in project management skills. The creation of green spaces have also been shown to increase biodiversity in micro-fauna. We aim to roll this out as a pilot program to 5 more dormitories and demonstrate feasibility in implementation and promote the inclusion of community gardens in other existing facilities and future facilities.Â
To complement the theme of urban sustainability, selected dormitories will also be considered for the installation of solar panels – contributing to Singapore Green Plan. Energy converted from the solar panels will be used to offset costs for workers’ electrical consumption.Â
About CMSC
Established on 6 April 2020, the COVID-19 Migrant Support Coalition (CMSC) is a fully volunteer-run group-up initiative that started as a collaborative effort between a few smaller migrant workers supporting groups, together with other like-minded volunteers, to meet the needs of our migrant friends affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. To this end, we also actively engage their dorm operators and employers, the relevant Ministries as well as the wider public, so that the issues can be dealt with through a multi-sector perspective. The effort is a highly collective one, and we believe that everyone has a part to play.
