What happened to Ensha?
Ensha was in a workplace accident on 3 July 2023. While installing soundproof curtain insulation, he fell from a height of 6 metres and fractured his rib when the screw from the safety cable struck his chest. After 2 weeks of hospitalisation, he was discharged with an estimated recovery period of 6 months. Since then, Ensha experiences chest pain whenever he moves, rendering him unable to work at his previous capacity. The persistent sharp pain in his chest prompted him to stop working and focus on his recovery.
Ensha stopped receiving his full salary after the accident. Subsequently, he had signed an agreement stating to receive a monthly food allowance of $150 from his employer starting from October 2023. Ensha’s employer tried an alternative method for Ensha to collect his meals from the office. They soon realised the inconvenient dorm location to the office was unsustainable, thus, MOM has reverted it back to a $150 monthly food allowance since November. This amount is insufficient to keep up with his daily expenses.

Ensha, 55, has been working in the construction industry in Singapore since 2012. His income enables him to support his hearing impaired wife and daughter, who is currently in her final year of university.
Ensha strongly identifies with his role as a husband and father. All these years, he took pride in providing for his family and putting his daughter through higher education. He was content until the accident robbed their family stability. When he shared his story with our caseworkers, his disappointment and guilt were palpable as he berated himself for his failure to fulfil what he sees as his responsibility.
Ensha is currently on a Special Pass since the termination of his work permit. He is receiving treatment with both the hospital and TCM, which requires an extended recovery time. Although it would be a long process, Ensha has come to terms and is focusing on recovering. Following this, the basic workmen compensation remains an uncertainty until the doctor has assessed his degree of permanent incapacity. He has also made plans to return to his hometown once he completes his treatments and expresses his heartfelt longing to reunite with his family.
