Background
Mdm Hoh is a 71-year-old elderly living alone in a rental unit. She is from Malaysia and has been living here for more than 30 years. She is married to a Singaporean man, 73-year-old Mr Ng, and the couple have no children. Mr Ng is currently staying in a nursing home since January this year and is gravely ill. He has end stage kidney failure and has been suffering from this illness since 2013. Mdm Hoh herself suffers from diabetes.
The Struggle
Before he was diagnosed with kidney failure, Mr Ng was working as an odd job labourer and the couple lived a very simple but happy life. Ever since her husband was been admitted to a nursing home, Mdm Hoh has been lonely and faces financial difficulties. She is a loving wife and travels every day to accompany her husband for his daily dialysis. Even when she is unwell, she will travel to the nursing home to be there for her husband who is towards the end stage of his life. While describing her loneliness without her husband and the financial difficulties that she is currently facing, Mdm Hoh broke down and cried and needed a moment to compose herself.
Even though Mdm Hoh is married to a Singaporean and has called Singapore her home for more than 30 years, she is ineligible for financial assistance due to her residency status. She is currently surviving on S$250 a month given to her by her sister in law and with that little money she has trouble meeting her basic needs.
On top of financial difficulties, she is faced with crippling loneliness as she is alone in Singapore without much family support. It has been a difficult transition for her since her husband was admitted to a nursing home.
Financial breakdownÂ
Ray of Hope would like to raise S$3,600 (S$150 x 24 months) to defray her living expenses for 24 months. Please give hope to Mdm Hoh. She is currently facing financial difficulties and crippling loneliness.
