Caring for a family of 8 with just $0.80 left
A Father Carrying the Weight of Eight Lives
Mr Harry is a father of six children, all still in school. Together with his wife, he is raising a family of eight with almost no income. Neither parent is currently employed.
The family survives on past savings and whatever small amounts Mr Harry can earn through irregular employment, taken only when caregiving and health constraints allow.
Every dollar is stretched carefully. Every decision is made with his children in mind.
At the centre of this family’s life is Mr Harry’s 19-year-old daughter, Haziqah.
A Childhood Reshaped by Illness
Haziqah was first diagnosed with leukaemia in 2017. A tumour the size of a tennis ball was found along her spine. She underwent multiple rounds of chemotherapy, but when treatment eventually stopped working, doctors had to proceed with a bone marrow transplant in 2018.
Complications followed. She developed a severe lung infection that did not respond to antibiotics. To save her life, doctors had no choice but to remove her right lung.
Today, Haziqah lives with reduced lung capacity and ongoing medical needs. She has mobility challenges, requires diapers, and needs constant care.
Mr Harry is her full-time caregiver. “My day starts and ends with her needs,” he shares. “I cannot leave her alone.”
At the same time, his wife is primarily occupied with caring for their other five children. Due to their and the demands of daily supervision and school coordination, she is unable to take on employment at this time.
Caregiving shapes every hour of the family’s day.
When Caregiving Takes a Toll
While caring for his daughter, Mr Harry’s own health has steadily worsened. He suffers from asthma and a long-standing ankle injury from an accident eight years ago. Surgery was recommended then, but he postponed it when his wife was expecting a child.
He chose to endure the pain so he could continue supporting his family.
Over the years, the condition worsened. Mr Harry now lives with daily pain and relies on painkillers just to function. Cold or wet weather further limits his mobility, making caregiving physically risky.
After ongoing medical assessments, doctors have indicated that surgery is likely, with a prolonged recovery period that would leave him unable to work. His Medifund application was unsuccessful, leaving the family without medical or financial backup.
Why Help is Needed Now
Despite everything, Mr Harry tries to protect his children’s sense of normalcy. He brings them to nearby parks and free community events whenever he can.
“I want them to feel like other children,” he says. “Even if life is hard, they deserve happiness.”
But the family has reached a breaking point.
As of 19 December 2025, Mr Harry has just $0.80 left in his bank account. The family has already experienced water supply disruption due to unpaid bills and remains at risk of further utility disconnection.. Without timely help, they may struggle to meet basic needs or maintain a safe living environment for the children.
The family sought help from SSO, but their application was unsuccessful. With no access to formal assistance and no family support, crowdfunding is the only immediate avenue available to stabilise the household.
This campaign seeks to raise $4,000 ($1,000 x 4 months) for the groceries expenses for a household of eight.
This support will give the family breathing room during an intensely fragile period. It allows Mr. Harry to continue caring for his daughter while navigating his own medical needs, without the constant fear of immediate collapse.
It is a chance for this family to stay afloat, together.
