Alom never saw it coming. For 15 years, he has worked hard in Singapore, leaving his family behind to help build tunnels, MRT stations, and community projects across the island. Like many migrant workers, he came here for one reason: to build a better life for his family back home.
But on 15 November 2023, a sudden, tragic accident turned that dream upside down. While working with his team to dry concrete using an industrial hot blower, the machine caught fire and exploded, leaving Alom with severe burns across 74% of his body. The injuries were so severe that he spent over five months in the ICU, and his life has since been a relentless series of surgeries, therapies, and recovery steps.
Battling An Uncertain Future
It feels profoundly unfair. Alom came to Singapore hoping to provide for his loved ones, but instead, he returns home struggling to move, scarred, and without the use of his hands—tools essential for his work.
“My wife was so worried when I was in the ICU – don’t know if I can wake up or not,” he says quietly.
Her worry echoes his own as he navigates a life so different from what he had ever planned.
As Alom now faces his final stages of recovery, he’s met with another harsh reality. The MC wages that have supported him are coming to an end, and the transport assistance from his employer will also stop. Even as he awaits a doctor’s assessment for his WICA application, Alom will need to cover his own living expenses, including food, transportation for medical appointments, phone top-ups to keep in touch with his family, and clinic visits for basic health needs.
Ray of Hope aims to raise $2,100 to cover Alom’s essential expenses over the next six months as he fights to recover and regain his strength. At $350 a month, this will give him the stability to focus on healing without the weight of financial insecurity.
Alom’s Unwavering Courage.
With resilience in his voice, Alom recalls the dormitory’s heat and laughs lightly,
“Other people feel the dorm is hot, they cannot tahan. But to me, I go through worse before, so this actually is ok for me.”
His courage is unwavering, but his journey is far from over. Your support can help Alom rebuild, offering him a chance to recover and, hopefully, find his way back to a life that fulfils the dreams he came here to pursue. Every donation brings him closer to healing, ensuring he doesn’t have to walk this path alone.
Let’s come together to stand by Alom in his time of need.
