Dear friends,
Thank you for reading our letter! As you may know, I’ve returned to working on full-time homeless ministry after my recent wedding. I was previously working full-time with GovTech as a software engineer, but sensed strongly a calling to return to serving the homeless. It was timely, because when I left my job, the news came out reporting about 1000 people sleeping rough on the streets.
(https://www.todayonline.com/singapore/about-1000-homeless-people-sleeping-rough-singapore-first-ever-study-finds)
In view of this news, it was amazing to witness what God has been doing this year. Like, our wedding was featured in the news, and Yio Chu Kang Chapel just recently announced the opening of their chapel premises to help provide a safe overnight shelter for our homeless friends. And the Salvation Army is now partnering with Homeless Hearts to start mobile outreaches to the homeless, and also mobile clinics (which Cheng Yu is working on) to bring primary healthcare to our friends where they are.
As such, my work with Homeless Hearts includes the following:
– Developing a real-time web/mobile app in collaboration with MSF’s PEERS network to help the homeless find help faster;
– Conducting talks and outreach trails to raise awareness among institutes of higher learning, other NGOs, local churches and families to encourage them to open up their places (via MSF’s Safe Sound Sleeping Places (S3Ps) programme) to host and befriend homeless people (including homeless women and children);
– Reaching out to private-sector partners and NGOs to help them discover their best ways of helping the homeless reintegrate into society, and to also link them up with one another;
– Designing and developing educational and advocacy materials to educate the public on the homelessness situation in Singapore and how to care for and reach out to them;
As I’m working full-time now on the homeless community app system which is of urgent priority (given the increasing numbers of homeless cases we are receiving daily), we would need sufficient funds to be able to not only pay for the creation and maintenance of the app and servers, etc, but also help provide for our living expenses. We’re aiming for $10K or even more for this campaign. All proceeds will go to me directly (not to Homeless Hearts of Singapore itself), as I currently do not take any income from Homeless Hearts.
Thank you so much and God bless!
Warmest regards,
Abraham & Cheng Yu
