At 65 years old, Mr. Chin struggles with multiple health conditions and bodily pains, making employment difficult. He and his wife, Shiying, 61, have been the main caregivers for their 11-year-old grandson, Yu Xiangyu, whom they love dearly. Despite their dedication, financial constraints make it difficult for them to provide a safe and comfortable home.
Shiying works as a cleaner, earning $1,100 monthly—barely enough to cover their living expenses. With Xiangyu’s school fees costing over $800 a month due to his foreigner status, the family is constantly burdened by debt and struggles to make ends meet. Even in their challenging situation, Mr. Chin and Shiying still try to support their daughter’s family whenever possible.
The Family’s Challenges
The family of three resides in a one-room rental flat, where space is extremely limited. To make room, they stack their belongings vertically and use a double-decker bed for additional storage. Due to their close quarters, illnesses spread quickly, further affecting their well-being. Cleaning and rearranging furniture is a challenge, making it difficult for them to maintain a safe living environment.
In November 2025, Mr. Chin suffered a serious fall while attempting to change a light bulb, resulting in three spinal fractures. He is still in significant pain and requires a proper bed and mattress to support his recovery. Additionally, their bathroom floor is slippery and has accumulated mould in cracked tiles, increasing the risk of further accidents.
With his mobility now limited, Mr. Chin can no longer volunteer at the nearby temple or community programs, affecting his sense of purpose. Meanwhile, Shiying continues working full-time while they seek assistance from social support organizations for Xiangyu’s educational costs.
