A Life-Altering Accident
Arman, a 30-year-old welder from Bangladesh, has been working in Singapore since July 2022 to support his family back home. In July 2023, Arman slipped and fell off the ramp while retrieving a heavy gas cylinder weighing at least 60kg, as instructed by his supervisor. He suffered severe injuries to his fingers, back, and left shoulder. The accident left him with cuts on his left index finger and right ring finger, with the flesh and bone sliced off his left index finger.
Immediately after the accident, Arman was sent to the hospital for acute treatment involving medication and injections. The following morning, he underwent further surgery to cut off the bone in his left index finger to avoid further complications. This injury has left Arman unable to fully bend his left index finger and experiencing pain in his back if he sits for longer than 20 minutes. He relies on painkillers to manage the constant pain in his fingers, back, and shoulder.
Due to his injury, Arman was put on a series of medical leave from July 2023 to June 2024. However, he has not received his entitled medical leave wages for May and June 2024.Â
Financial Support on the Road to Recovery
Ray of Hope aims to raise funds to support Arman’s living expenses, estimated at $300 per month, for six months while he awaits the outcome of his compensation claim with the Ministry of Manpower (MOM). This will help cover his essential needs in Singapore, including food, accommodation, transportation to medical appointments, MOM visits, and other necessities. Arman is currently on a Special Pass that prohibits him from taking on employment, so he has no income to support himself. Your donations will give him the financial support to focus on his recovery.
Find out more about Arman
As the sole breadwinner for his household of six, including his homemaker wife, two young daughters aged three and six, and two retired elderly parents, Arman worked six days a week as a welder, often putting in long hours from 8 am to as late as 10 pm with overtime. With regular overtime, he would earn around $1,093 a month, remitting the bulk of his salary to his family in Bangladesh and keeping only $300 for himself. Since the accident, the inability to work and provide for his family has caused Arman great distress, as he worries about their well-being and ability to put food on the table without his income.
In addition to the financial hardship caused by Arman’s loss of income, his family has also had to bear the cost of unexpected medical expenses. In June 2024, Arman’s mother suffered complications from an incorrectly administered injection, requiring surgery, skin grafting, and a two-month stay in the ICU. Just two months later, his daughter experienced stomach pains, requiring medication costing over a hundred dollars. Arman’s family had to borrow a large sum of money from relatives to cover these expenses, adding to their financial burden.
