Background

Mr Ruwar*, 44 years old, is a father to 4 children between the ages of 15 years old to 24 years old. His family lived in poverty in Bangladesh and in order to provide a better life for his children, he took a bank loan of more than S$16,000 and came to Singapore towards the end of December last year in order to work as a construction worker.

The Struggle

Mr Ruwar was initially paid his salary on time and with his salary, he managed to put his 4 children through school and provide for the household expenses. However, his employer stopped paying his salary for the months of April – June this year and on the 29^th of June 2019 the company he was working for closed down. He lodged a complaint to recover almost S$5,500 of owed salary however, he had to settle for only S$800.

Life has not been easy for Mr Ruwar. He was not paid his salary and now, he has chronic health issues. On the 15^th of July 2019, he was hospitalised for 21 days due to intestine bleeding caused by a festering boil. Due to his diabetes, the wound is not healing well and up till today, the wound is not fully healed. Mr Ruwar also informs us that he has heart disease.

Ray of Hope have been informed that Mr Ruwar will not be getting compensation as his wound is not due to a workplace related accident. Mr Ruwar is currently worried as his family including his 4 children are struggling as he has not sent money home for months.
