Background
Mr Abu* 39 years old, has been working in Singapore as a construction worker since 2003. He is diligent and hardworking and in order to upgrade himself, took on various courses. In March this year, he moved to a new company working as a construction supervisor, earning a higher salary.
His family lived in poverty in rural Bangladesh. His mother is 70 years old and his father is 74 years old. He is the only son and his parent’s sole breadwinner.
The Accident
Mr Abu has had a very difficult year. He informs us that he was initially paid his salary. However, since May this year, his employer has stopped paying his salary, but he was still expected to work. He has lodged a report with the Tripartite Alliance for Dispute Management (TADM) however, Mr Abu informs us that his employer is no longer contactable, and he fears that he will never be able to claim back his salary from his errant employer.
His difficult circumstances did not stop there. On the 15th of September this year, Mr Abu suffered a fall while he was crossing the road. As it was late in the evening, he did not see a stone that was on the footpath. As a result, when he stepped on the stone, he fell and fractured his right foot. He is now unable to walk well and is on a cast. He has been given 64 days of MC. Mr Abu informs us that since this is not a work-related injury, there will be no compensation given to him.
His elderly parents are currently struggling back home as he has not been able to support them for a few months.
Give Hope – Help Needed
Ray of Hope would like to raise S$1,020 (S$510 x 2 months) to defray his parent’s living expenses in Bangladesh and Mr Abu’s living expenses in Singapore while he awaits a resolution to his salary claim.
