What happened to Johurul?
30-year-old migrant worker, Johurul, has been dedicated to supporting his family in Bangladesh through his labor here in Singapore. A tragic incident has left him in a dire situation, and now he needs our support to rebuild his life.
On 14 October 2023, while manually carrying 150 bags of cement, each weighing 40kg, Johurul experienced excruciating pain in his back. Despite the agony, he continued working to fulfil his responsibilities. It was only after attempting to stand up following a short rest that he realised the severity of his condition – he couldn’t stand upright due to the intense pain.
Johurul was taken to a nearby clinic, where he was prescribed painkillers. However, his journey of recovery was far from over. Months later, an MRI revealed severe damage to his lower back due to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, leading to persistent pain and numbness. This rendered him unable to walk long distances or carry heavy loads, activities crucial to his livelihood as a migrant worker.
How can you help?
Your generosity can alleviate the weight of growing financial concerns and provide for Johurul’s essential living expenses. We aim to raise $465 per month for six months, allowing Johurul to focus on his recovery while he settles his injury claims. All funds raised will be transferred directly to Johurul to ensure he receives the needed help.
Appeal from Johurul:
Before the accident, Johurul diligently remitted the majority of his $1,100 salary to his wife and siblings in Bangladesh, leaving a meagre amount for himself, which is barely enough to cover his basic needs, let alone medical expenses and outstanding debts.
Back home, Johurul bears the weight of providing for his elderly parents, wife, son, three younger siblings, and their children. Johurul’s dad suffered a heart attack last year, resulting in ongoing physical limitations. His 62-year-old mother is mute and suffers from hearing issues.
Johurul was on medical leave for over four months, during which he received partial compensation, including meal allowances. However, most of his wages, including outstanding medical leave payments, remain unpaid for 14 days. This financial strain has only compounded his challenges in providing for his family back home.
Separated from his loved ones due to his injuries, Johurul experiences a deep sense of isolation, intensifying his feelings of loneliness and amplifying the emotional toll of his situation.
Johurul needs our support to alleviate the financial strain caused by his injury, to enable him to regain stability.
