Joseph and his elder brother moved to Singapore from Malaysia to seek greener pastures. The 23 year-old was working in the Food & Beverage (F&B) line, earning a monthly salary of $2,400. His 25 year-old brother, Michael works as a registered nurse in a local hospital and earns around $3,500.
In December 2021, Joseph experienced abdominal pain as well as a sudden loss of appetite. He consulted doctors and was prescribed some medication. However, when his symptoms persisted till February 2022, he was referred to the oncologist and was subsequently diagnosed with cancer. Joseph needs to undergo a total of seven chemotherapy cycles (3 weeks apart) to keep the cancer cells in control.
Joseph wants to recover in order to continue working. As a Malaysian holding a work permit, he is not eligible for medical subsidies in Singapore. His chemotherapy treatment costs $4,856.55 per cycle and his medications cost more than $940 a month.
The brothers were working hard to also support their family back in Singapore. Their father earns around $270 a month as a car mechanic, and their mother is a housewife. They also have two younger sisters. The 21 year-old sister works part time and the 17 year-old is still attending school.
*Joseph is not receiving social assistance.
