What happened to Mdm Fara?
52 year-old Mdm Fara lives with her husband and 81-year-old father, Mr Wahidin, in a 1 room flat. He was previously employed as a security guard, but a fall at his workplace rendered him unfit for work. It was also discovered in a routine check up that he has early stage dementia, with symptoms of aggression. He also has kidney disease, which is currently managed by oral medication. His full reliance on Mdm Fara for care for his activities of daily living means that she has been unable to work as she has been his full time caregiver since 2022.
The youngest of her four children, Sara*, aged 15, lives with Mdm Fara’s brother but continues to rely on her for financial needs.
How can you help?
The household is scraping by on the income of Mr Nazmi and with this, is ineligible for social assistance. Nonetheless, their apartment is sparsely furnished, without some appliances that every household would need.
Your one-time gift will provide them with a washing machine, gas stove and water heater. It would also support Mdm Fara’s daughter’s schooling needs for 4 months, while helping the couple move towards a more stable and self-sufficient future.
Funds raised will be used to support the schooling expenses for Mdm Fara’s daughter ($226 x 4 months) as well as for the purchase of:
- Gas stove: $350
- Water heater: $145

Mdm Fara has four children, of whom 3 are adults and living on their own. The youngest resides with Mdm Fara’s mother and brother while she cares for her father.
In 2015, Mdm Fara was incarcerated for drugs. Since her release in 2020, life seemed bleak with the daily grind and multiple challenges. Things started to change when she met and married Mr Nazmi. They moved into a 1-room rental flat in July this year, hopeful for their future. Mr Nazmi works as a Guest Service Agent, earning approximately $1,800 a month.
Reflecting on how her incarceration has impacted her life, Mdm Fara said: “I lost out on time with my family. Now that I have the chance to make it up to my family, I want to be a good daughter to take care of my parents.”
Through the years, Mdm Fara relied heavily on her younger brother for emotional support. Mdm Fara’s younger brother is the caregiver to their 79 year-old mother.
The family is currently working on alternative caregiving arrangements such as enrolling Mr Wahidin in daycare, and it is likely to take some time for the family to work with their social worker. Mdm Fara hopes to work on seeking part-time employment after the caregiving arrangements have been sorted.
*Mdm Fara is not receiving social assistance. Mr Wahidin receives a quarterly payout of $720 from the Silver Support Scheme.
