Ray of Hope is raising $1,332 ($111 x 12 months) for 87 year-old Mdm Lee’s subsidized Home Personal Care Services for a year. The funds raised will support her in her activities of daily living and provide her with a clean and conducive home to live in.
Mdm Lee, 87, lives alone in a two-room rental flat. In 2018, the elderly suffered a fall, requiring surgery. After two surgeries, Mdm Lee’s legs did not heal well, leading to her poor mobility since and she is unable to walk unassisted.
Mdm Lee relies heavily on the support of her god-daughter who visits her thrice a week and accompanies her for medical appointments. She also helps Mdm Lee with the cleaning of her home and washing of clothes. Mdm Lee’s 60 year-old son is currently serving the last leg of his sentence in a halfway house, and only visits Mdm Lee once a week. Working as a cleaner, he supports Mdm Lee with $150 a month.
Mdm Lee used to hold largely cleaning jobs before her fall. With her poor mobility now and a loss of ability to support herself, Mdm Lee requires Home Personal Care services four days a week, as she is no longer able to live independently.
While Mdm Lee understands that there are alternative options to move into residential care which is ideal for her current condition, she still hopes to stay in the community as long as possible, while she is able to. At 87, she wants to continue living with a sense of purpose.
The Home Personal Care Services for Mdm Lee include assisting with bathing, change of diapers and toileting, bringing her downstairs for meals, assisting with meals, befriending, running errands and shopping for groceries, and medication reminders.
Relying only on some assistance from the Social Service Office (SSO) and a quarterly Silver Support payout, Mdm Lee is unable to afford the subsidized services that can not only support her in her activities of daily living, but also ensure a clean and conducive home for her to live in.
*Mdm Lee is receiving social assistance. She also receives 80% subsidy for her Home Personal Care services.
