Mdm Yana is a single mother to 3 children aged 11, 22 and 25. Her older children have their own family commitments and are unable to contribute due to low wages. Mdm Yana lives in a 1-room rental flat with her youngest son, who would accompany her for her medical appointments.
Mdm Yana’s frequent hospitalisation since December 2022 has made it difficult for her to renew her SSO assistance when it ended in the same month. While she has since submitted all necessary documents, she is awaiting the results of her application.
To ensure her family’s livelihood is sustainable, Mdm Yana plans to put in an application for longer term support after her doctor’s appointment in June 2023, when she is highly likely to be certified unfit for employment. With the memo, Mdm Yana can apply for longer-term financial assistance for her family. She has also applied for a transfer from her current dialysis centre to one closer to home to cut travelling time and transport costs. While she looks forward to this, she has been informed that the wait list might take between 6 to 12 months to clear.
Mdm Yana hopes to continue her dialysis treatment and prolong her life so that she can continue to be there for her youngest son as he grows up.
*Mdm Yana is currently awaiting the outcome of her social assistance application. Until she gets her doctor’s memo certifying that she is unfit for work, the quantum of assistance is unlikely to fully cover her full subsistence needs. .
