What happened to Mdm Wati?
After enduring years of domestic abuse, Mdm Wati, 37, recently found the strength to break free from the shackles of that painful past and embark on her journey of empowerment and hope. As a single mother of three girls, including two with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), this journey has not been an easy one for Mdm Wati.
Beyond the physical and emotional legacy of abuse, Mdm Wati also struggles with pragmatic financial challenges as she strives to provide for her young family. As the sole pillar for her 3 girls, Mdm Wati is greatly distressed as she works tirelessly to support her children.
Recently, Mdm Wati started working as a warehouse assistant and is determined to stabilize her employment in that role. While this provides some reprieve for some of their needs, the income she receives still falls short of the family’s growing needs.
How can you help?
Mdm Wati is still coming to terms with the impact of domestic abuse; the stress of barely making ends meet on a monthly basis, and the shame of her household’s debt with family members make it difficult for her to reach out for support. Your gift of $500 each month will ease her financial burden and create space for her to consider next steps for herself and her family.

Following their marriage in 2017, Mdm Wati’s husband did not have stable employment and did not provide for family, leaving her to bear the financial burden alone. Tragically, she also endured episodes of abuse throughout their three-year marriage before they finally divorced in 2022. Mdm Wati’s ex-husband continues to neglect his obligation to provide regular maintenance for the family, while leaving them in debt when he borrowed money from Mdm Wati’s relatives. In order to maintain amicable relations with her relatives, Mdm Wati is left to pay off these debts on top of her already heavy financial burden.
Despite these hardships, Mdm Wati remains a pillar of strength for her three girls, particularly her two oldest daughters, both aged 6, who have been diagnosed with ASD and face various learning difficulties. The girls currently attend Early Intervention Programme for Infants and Children (EIPIC) and Mdm Wati expresses concern about their future schooling arrangements, with the girls progressing to a new Primary School next year.
Mdm Wati takes great pride in fulfilling her dual parenting roles and tries her best to actively involve herself in meeting the three girl’s daily needs. However, this has not been easy for Mdm Wati. While she struggles to be the mother her girls need in the day, at night, she is left to struggle with the impact of the abuse she suffered. Plagued with anxiety and insomnia, she spends the nights battling with the scars from the past.
Despite these difficulties, Mdm Wati remains determined and hopeful for what is to come in the future, embracing the belief that better days lie ahead, in spite of her painful past experiences. She is committed to being present for her children and fulfilling her dual parenting roles to the best of her ability. Her unwavering strength is evident in her statement that she knows she needs to be strong to protect her children.
*Mdm Wati is currently receiving social assistance.
