Family of 7 with health issues struggles to make ends meet
When the caseworkers spoke to Mdm. Chua, they were surprised by her positive disposition despite the circumstances she is facing. She shared that all 7 of her children suffer from a long list of medical conditions. Her eldest son, who is currently awaiting his National Service, suffers from diabetes and severe pain in his back, while her 16 year old daughter was diagnosed with diabetes, neurology issues, dyslexia, eczema and Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) issues. Her 9-year-old son who suffers from ADHD also has learning difficulties and is also on a monthly follow-up for his neurology and ENT issues. Her 8-year-old and 6-year olds were not spared from being diagnosed with various conditions as well.
Mdm. Chua’s husband, who also suffers from multiple health issues, was earning a gross income of $1,500 as a kitchen assistant. Together with some assistance from SSO, the family of 7 was able to tide by. Unfortunately, her husband has been put on furlough until further notice, leaving the family without an income. He was also informed by his employer that due to the impact on businesses caused by Covid-19, his salary will undergo adjustments. The family’s SSO assistance, which ended in April, is also in the process of being renewed.
Mdm. Chua used to work as a restaurant manager but now earns only about $200 a month from odd jobs. She is currently on several follow-ups for orthopaedic issues, kidney stones and depression.
“Everyone in my family are not well, and the hospital is just like our second home.”, Mdm Chua describes.
While suffering from these health problems herself, Mdm. Chua has remained hopeful, and has not given up. She has been trying to take on odd jobs to pay off her bills, and to give their children the best chance in life that they can have. However, with the loss of their family’s income due to the economic impact of Covid-19, the family is in debts owing to various agencies and they are still unable to fully pay everything off.
Ray of Hope is raising $5,000 ($1,000 x 5 months) to defray the groceries expenses of Mdm Chua’s family. Please donate to give hope to the family of 7!
*Mdm Chua’s social assistance is currently being renewed.
May God give you strength.
