Help Mr. Chan with Daily Groceries
At 81, Mr. Chan lives alone and continues to manage as much as he can on his own. He has always believed in living simply and spending within his means.
For most of his working life, Mr. Chan earned a living as a logistics mover. It was physically demanding work, but he took pride in supporting himself through honest labour. After years of lifting and moving heavy loads, the physical demands of the job took a toll on his body. Today, he lives with chronic pain in both legs, and his mobility has declined to the point where he relies on a wheelchair to get around.
Over the years, Mr. Chan has also lost both his parents and several of his siblings. Today, there are few close family members he can rely on for day-to-day support.
Living Within His Means
Throughout his working years, Mr. Chan earned a modest income that left little opportunity to build retirement savings. Today, he depends on long-term financial assistance to cover his daily living expenses. As the cost of living continues to rise, his limited income no longer stretches as far as it once did.
Every purchase is considered carefully. After paying for groceries and household necessities, Mr. Chan tries to keep a small amount aside in case he needs medication, transport, or another unexpected expense later in the month. “I hope I can continue living on my own for as long as I can,” he says.
How the Grocery Vouchers Will Help
We are raising $610.80* to provide Mr. Chan with $100 worth of grocery vouchers each month for six months.
At this stage of his life, Mr. Chan is no longer able to return to work. His age, limited mobility, and modest retirement resources mean he has little opportunity to increase his income. Living alone also means he has no close family to turn to when unexpected expenses arise.
The vouchers will help him purchase groceries and household essentials, complementing the financial assistance he already receives. By covering part of his monthly grocery expenses, they will help him manage his limited budget while setting aside a small amount for unexpected needs.
Six months of grocery vouchers will not solve every challenge Mr. Chan faces, but they will ease one important part of his monthly budget, allowing him to continue buying the essentials he needs without stretching his limited income quite so far each month.
