A Grandparent-Led Household Carrying More Than They Can Manage
Thanks to earlier donor support, Xiangyu was able to complete his PSLE and move on to Secondary School. This milestone brought the family a sense of relief and pride during a very difficult period. It eased a burden they had carried for years, and they remain deeply grateful to everyone who helped them get there.
Mr Chin, a Singaporean, and his wife, Mdm Shi, who holds a Long-Term Visit Pass, have cared for their 12 year-old grandson since he was young. Xiangyu is here on a Student Pass and has grown up in their small one room flat. The home is filled with affection, but the realities they face each day are heavy.
With only one income and several dependents, the family is constantly stretched. Bills pile up quickly, groceries do not always last and unexpected expenses create immediate strain. Still, the grandparents shoulder these responsibilities quietly, even when it means putting their own needs aside.
Doing Their Best While Struggling to Cope
Everything changed for the family after Mr Chin’s accident. A fall at home left him with three spinal fractures, and he now lives with ongoing pain and limited mobility. Work is no longer an option, and even simple tasks take time and effort.
This has left the full responsibility of supporting the household to Mdm Shi, who earns $1,200 a month as a cleaner. Her income goes straight to rent, utilities and Xiangyu’s school needs, leaving almost nothing spare. The family has no savings, and over the years, she has had to borrow from friends just to cover basic necessities and school-related expenses.
How Groceries Support Will Ease the Pressure
What the family needs most urgently is stability in their day to day necessities. Groceries are one of their largest recurring expenses and often the first area where sacrifices are made.Â
Knowing that they can put food on the table each month would give the grandparents room to breathe and allow them to use their limited cash on bills and medical needs.
Ray of Hope is raising eight months of NTUC vouchers ($500 x 8 months) to ease their daily load. This assistance allows them to redirect limited cash to essential bills.Â
Your contribution will lift the weight carried by an elderly couple who have given everything for their grandson.Â
