Ray of Hope is raising $3,500 ($700 x 5 months) to help Karupaiah with groceries.

Mr Karupaiah, 65, lives with his older sister and his 21 year-old son in their 4-room flat. Mr Karupaiah’s wife passed away in 2006.

In March 2022, Mr Karupaiah had to leave his job as a security officer, because of severe pain in the toes on his right foot. The pain intensified over the weeks and Mr Karupaiah was referred to a local polyclinic, where the doctors determined that two of his toes were infected and had to be amputated. As the infection was spreading quickly, the doctor advised Mr Karupaiah to have an amputation at the shin.

Mr Karupaiah finds using a prosthetic limb challenging and he also needs an adjustment for his prosthetic. Recently, his left leg started to swell and he is now waiting for the next medical appointment for treatment. Mr. Karupaiah also suffers from heart issues and high cholesterol.

Prior to the amputation, Mr Karupaiah worked as a security officer for three years, earning a net salary of $1,600 per month. He currently relies on his monthly CPF and the quarterly Silver Support payouts to make ends meet.

Mr Karupaiah’s son is enlisted in National Service and earns approximately $580 a month. His earnings are just enough to cover his own expenses and he does not contribute to the household.

Equipped with a security license and some experience, Mr Karupaiah hopes to return to the security line when he gets better. He hopes to continue supporting his elder sister who is also his main caregiver. Mr Karupaiah’s sister is unable to work due to severe rheumatism.
