Noraini is a single mum to her 3 children. The 49 year old who suffers from visual impairment has come a long way to supporting her school-going children single-handedly since her divorce in 2002.
During her younger days before she got married, Noraini was working as packer for 5 years before she got married. Unfortunately, her marriage ended in a divorce after her husband had an affair. In 2002, her matrimonial flat was also re-possessed by HDB when her ex-husband failed to upkeep the home mortgage. After the repossession, Noraini was left struggling to secure a roof over her head along with her children, until they received their current two-room rental flat.
Financial woes after ex-husband defaults on maintenance and she is unfit for work
Noraini’s two older children are currently in their first year of ITE. Her 22 year old daughter is trying to seek employment to sustain some income for the family, while her 20 year old son has also recently started doing food deliveries on days that he is not schooling. Noraini’s 18 year old daughter is currently awaiting to be enrolled in an ITE course and is working part-time to earn some income. Although the school fees of her children are fully subsidized, Noraini still struggles with their allowances and transport expenses without an income as she was certified permanently unfit for employment. The family is currently relying on public assistance of $800 to make ends meet. Noraini’s 67 year old mum is also staying with the family.
