Supporting Nurul as She Cares for Her Daughter
A Home Centered on Care and Routine
Over the past year, Nurul made the difficult decision to step away from work to care for her older daughter full-time, who has been facing significant mental health challenges.
Now a stay-at-home mother to two daughters aged 13 and 12, much of Nurul’s daily life revolves around caregiving and maintaining stability at home. She ensures both girls get safely to and from school, prepares meals at home, and remains emotionally present for her older daughter, whose struggles have become increasingly difficult over time.
Her presence has become especially important as she continues to be a pillar of support for her children during this difficult period.
“I just try my best to stretch with what I have and try to cope,” Nurul shares quietly, describing how she manages the household.
Meals are almost always prepared at home, and eating out is rare. Despite the family’s financial difficulties, Nurul continues doing her best to keep daily life familiar and comforting for her daughters by cooking meals they enjoy and maintaining a sense of routine at home.
Walking Alongside Her Daughter
Nurul’s older daughter has been facing emotional difficulties linked to schooling transitions and has become increasingly withdrawn. The school has been actively supporting her, with teachers remaining in close communication with Nurul to monitor her well-being both in school and at home.
At home, Nurul remains attentive throughout the day, ensuring her daughter is emotionally supported and not left alone during difficult moments. Much of her time is spent accompanying her through daily routines, emotional struggles, and school-related challenges.
As her daughter’s needs increased, Nurul found it increasingly difficult to continue working while remaining consistently present for her care.
A Household Managing on One Income
With Nurul no longer working, the family now relies solely on her husband’s income as a food delivery rider. His earnings are often below $1,500 a month and vary significantly depending on demand and working hours.
Supporting a household of four on a single and inconsistent income has become increasingly difficult. While the family receives some formal assistance, it does not fully cover their monthly needs. School-related expenses alone amount to about $200 each month for both daughters, before accounting for rent, utilities, groceries, and transport.
Despite their efforts to manage carefully, the family continues to face ongoing financial strain.
Care, Sacrifice, and Daily Adjustments
Even amid financial difficulties, Nurul continues to manage the household with care and quiet resilience. She plans meals carefully, cuts back on unnecessary spending, and prioritises essentials for her daughters.
She also remains actively involved in her daughter’s care by maintaining close communication with teachers to ensure her daughter continues receiving support both emotionally and academically.
Through everything, Nurul’s focus remains simple: keeping her children safe, supported, and cared for during a difficult season.
