Migrant workers like Sabbir are the backbone of our city, building the homes, roads, and spaces we depend on every day. Now, as he faces his toughest challenge, it’s our turn to come together and support him through this difficult time.
While on duty in January 2024, Sabbir was instructed by his supervisor to carry window frames weighing 35kg from the ground floor to the fifth level—alone. As he climbed the stairs, the frames snagged on a scaffold, causing him to fall, with the heavy frames landing on his back and ankle. The accident left him with a torn ligament and severe pain in his lower back and ankle.
Living Day to Day with Pain and Uncertainty
Sabbir’s struggle has only worsened since his accident. He hasn’t received any consistent wages since February 2024, leaving him with no money for food or other essentials. Although his employer provided meals, Sabbir had to travel from Clementi to Changi to pick them up—bus fare alone costing more than a single meal. With no choice, Sabbir often skips meals, surviving on sporadic food donations.
Each day is a battle against the pain and stiffness that radiates from his back to his ankle. It takes hours before the pain eases enough for him to stand or walk. Sabbir has been attending physiotherapy sessions regularly, which have brought some relief, but recovery feels slow and uncertain.
A Heavy Burden from Afar
Back in Bangladesh, Sabbir’s family is also suffering. As the sole provider for a household of five—his wife, young son, brother, and elderly mother—Sabbir has always carried their financial burdens. His mother’s recent lung cancer diagnosis in August 2024 has only added to his emotional and financial stress. The passing of his father in February, shortly after Sabbir’s accident, left him unable to visit or support his grieving family.
Help Sabbir Get Back on His Feet
With no income and waiting on MOM’s compensation process, Sabbir is struggling to afford even the most basic necessities and transport for his physiotherapy appointments. Ray of Hope is raising $3,000 to cover Sabbir’s essential living expenses for the next six months, helping him hold on until he receives his due compensation. $500 every month would allow Sabbir to afford:
– Food expenses: $300
– Sundry items: $50
– Transport fees (Physiotherapy and other appointments): $100
– Phone top-ups: $20
Your kindness would offer Sabbir a small measure of relief, giving him access to necessities and the chance to focus on healing. Together, we can help him find stability as he works through these difficult times and looks toward a better tomorrow.
