The Struggle
Losing both the family’s sole income and their SSO assistance, Mdm Shakila is concerned about accumulating debts while her assistance is being renewed and for her husband to find a new job. “Our baby just had her open-heart surgery on 1st April. Now my husband is trying his best to find a job to support the family after being retrenched,” Mdm Shakila shared, deeply worried about her family’s finances. Their SSO assistance ended last month. Mdm Shakila also has another 4-year-old son in her care.
Mdm Shakila’s husband was working as a driver earning a nett income of $2,000. With his income and some assistance from SSO, the family of 4 was able to make ends meet. Unfortunately, Mdm Shakila’s husband was retrenched from his job because of poor work attendance from the time he took leave as Mdm Shakila was giving birth. His employer was also reducing the number of drivers required for deliveries. The retrenchment has left the family without an income, further aggravated by the Covid-19 situation, when employment opportunities remain bleak amidst companies downscaling their operations. However, Mdm Shakila’s husband is not about to give up, and is trying his best to continue applying for jobs so that his family does not need to worry about their next meal.
Financial Breakdown
Ray of Hope is raising $2,100 to support Mdm Shakila’s family for a period of 3 months while her husband works on seeking new employment. Please donate to give hope to a family with a retrenched sole breadwinner and a baby who needs medical attention.
*Mdm Shakila’s public assistance is currently being renewed.
