What happened to Shankar?
Between July 2023 and January 2024, Shankar supported his family of 3 as a mover, earning a salary of $1,400 per month. His wife had intentions to do the same and started working as a cleaner in October 2023. However, severe pregnancy symptoms cut her employment short, just a month later. Severe dizziness, morning sickness and physical weakness made it unsafe for her to continue working as a cleaner.
In January 2024, Shankar’s ability to provide for his family was compromised when he slipped and fell in the restroom, resulting in a fractured right hand. The injury was severe, causing visible wincing and uncontrollable trembling when he tried to make a fist as the fall affected his nerve. As a result, Shankar has been on medical leave until 24 May 2024.
To sustain their livelihood during this challenging period, Shankar has resorted to taking odd jobs, such as sorting mail, 1-2 times per week. However, the income from these sporadic opportunities fluctuates between $300 and $500 monthly, with Shankar earning approximately $70 daily.
How can you support the family?
The family faces significant financial strain, exacerbated by Shankar’s injury and impending childbirth. Your contribution will provide vital short-term financial assistance, ensuring they can cover their living expenses as Shankar focuses on recovery and securing full-time employment. As they prepare to welcome their newborn, your support will also help alleviate the financial burden of childcare and medical expenses.
Ray of Hope is fundraising $3,220 to cover the family’s lost income and for Shankar’s wife’s hospital transportation fees ($460 x 7 months).
Shankar’s Road to Recovery
42-year-old Shankar, the sole breadwinner of the family, was forced to leave his job as a mover after sustaining a severe hand injury. A simple slip in the restroom resulted in a fractured right pinky finger, causing nerve damage that severely limited the use of his right hand. He is unable to work without the ability to withstand any weight in his dominant hand. As a result, the family’s financial stability took a drastic hit.
The sudden loss of income has taken a toll on Shankar, leaving him with worries and fears about the future. With mounting financial obligations and the responsibility of providing for his family, Shankar’s anxiety only grows as he navigates the uncertainty of employment. Shankar’s wife, Reshmi, is now 5 months pregnant with frequent debilitating symptoms, which adds to the family’s concerns. The couple also has an 8-year-old son.
With the family’s per capita income falling below the benchmark, it is urgent to help them tide through this storm. With their current income level, they can only afford the most basic of living expenses. Reshmi has already missed two gynaecological checkups due to the inability to cover transport costs. As the pregnancy progresses, these checkups are essential to monitor the baby’s well-being.
As Shankar focuses on his recovery and seeks full-time employment in the coming months, and in preparation for their newborn, your donation can provide a lifeline for this family, ensuring they can meet their basic needs and regain stability.
