Ray of Hope is raising $10,500 to help Silvia with her legal fees. The legal fee could reach $15,000. In spite of her tight financial situation, Silvia is committed to making co-payment. The estimated amount may vary in accordance to the complication of the case.
Silvia moved to Singapore in 2010 as a permanent resident to look for better job opportunities and to support her mother in Jakarta. She married her husband in 2013 and had two children, aged 9 and 6. While she did not notice any warning signs while they dated, her husband turned abusive early in their marriage. Things got progressively worse as time passed.
Throughout her marriage, her husband had been showing signs of abuse towards Silvia and her children, which resulted in her filing for divorce in September of 2022.
Silvia shared that she first experienced signs of abuse in May 2014, where her husband strangled her. This resulted in her filing for a Personal Protection Order(PPO) against her husband in 2016. In spite of promises of change, her husband abused her again in January 2018 – this time leaving her with a fractured rib cage. Her children not only witnessed the violence, but were also victims of the abuse. The constant shouting and harsh scolding by him has affected them negatively. They are currently under supervision from a psychiatrist, while Silvia is receiving counselling.
Silvia was hesitant about filing for a divorce with her husband, and had tried to make things work, even after filing for PPO in 2016. Seeing the impact of the violence on her children galvanized her to take action, giving her the courage to make the first step towards their safety and happiness.
Silvia has been able to make ends meet through the years based on her income. However, with medical and subsistence needs to worry about, legal fees are beyond her means. With the funds raised, Silvia will be able to complete her divorce proceedings, where she is fighting for full custody of her children. This would be a crucial step in her hope to provide a fresh start for her family.
