Stranded Without Pay, Injured, and Fighting for Justice

When Alam arrived in Singapore in 2006, he hoped to build a better future for his family in Bangladesh. But since August 2024, he has not received a salary. In February 2025, he stopped work entirely when the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) began investigating his employer for both a workplace injury claim and an attempt to abandon him in Johor Bahru. Alam is now stuck in Singapore as he awaits the conclusion of his case, unable to work, while his wife and five children struggle back home without any income. His meals and accommodation are covered in a dormitory, but he has no money for his daily needs. “I just came to Singapore, I don’t even have $5,” Alam shares quietly.

Injured and Abandoned by His Employer

On 18 September 2024,  a concrete boulder weighing about 30-40kg fell and crushed his thigh. Not only did his employer refused to send him to a doctor, they also insisted, “You no need go hospital, just eat panadol.” When Alam tried to see a doctor himself, he learned that his employer hadn’t even purchased his mandatory healthcare plan.

To make matters worse, his employer sent him to Johor Bahru on the third of February 2025 under false pretenses, left him with the clothes on his back, and proceeded to cancel his work pass. “Four days with no shower. You imagine,” Alam recalls. Resourceful and determined, he contacted MOM, who brought him back to Singapore.

Hope for His Family’s Future

Despite all this, Alam dreams of opening a pharmacy in Bangladesh to lift his family, including his father, out of poverty. But without an income, his loans mount, and he fears harassment from lenders if he returns home now. Alam is now on a special pass that bars him from working while his case concludes. Alam needs $300 a month for six months to access basic needs. Your support will allow him to stay in Singapore, pursue his case, and one day return home to rebuild his life.
