For over two decades, Jainullah and Benazir built their lives in Singapore, holding on to one dream. The dream of giving their children a future filled with opportunities they never had. They worked hard, made sacrifices, and did everything within their means to create a stable home. But sometimes, life has other plans.

A Home Built on Love and Sacrifice

Jainullah was only two when he arrived in Singapore. This is the only home he knows. He became a Permanent Resident at 13, and in 2005, he married Benazir and welcomed their first son in 2006, followed by their second in 2014.

He found his passion in the kitchen, working his way up from a junior role to a chef in a hotel. Years of dedication and three promotions later, things were looking up. They weren’t wealthy, but they were secure. Their boys had what they needed. Their dreams finally felt within reach.

Until the world changed overnight.

A Career Lost, A Family Struggling to Stay Afloat

When the pandemic struck, it didn’t just take away jobs—it took away security, dignity, and years of progress.

The hotel industry crumbled, and Jainullah lost the job he had worked so hard for. With nowhere else to turn, he took a daily-rated job at a hawker centre—a painful step down, but a necessary one. Benazir, too, took up a job at McDonald’s. Together, they worked long shifts just to put food on the table.

But no matter how hard they worked, it never seemed to be enough. Their biggest worry? Their children’s future.

A Son’s Dream, A Family’s Hope

Their eldest son has always been a dreamer, a doer, a believer.

“I want to study business in poly because it has been my passion since young. I hope to start my own business one day and help my family live a comfortable and happy life. I can’t bear the fact that my parents are working so hard every day for me and my brother. I want to make them proud.”

But when the cost of school fees became another weight on their shoulders, Jainullah and Benazir found themselves borrowing from friends and family just to keep their son’s education on track.

Benazir puts it simply: “I just want to give my children a good future, good study.”

But right now, even that is slipping through their fingers.
